How do I get my new puppy to stop crying at night?

He is an 8 week old English Springer Spaniel. When we put him in his kennel at night, he cries for close to an hour. It's really loud. It takes everything I have in me not to go and get him out, but I know that would just reinforce his behavior. Any advice on how to get him to quiet down?
